How to: Point a Domain Name to a Linux VPS using SkySilk

Modified on Mon, Jun 20, 2022 at 3:27 AM

For beginners setting up their first website, it can be easy to get confused when it comes to connecting your domain name to your hosting service. Simply purchasing a domain name does not mean one has a website available for users, the domain must be pointed to a host, which will serve the site's content. This brief tutorial will show you how to point a domain that you own to a SkySilk Linux VPS.

This tutorial assumes you own a domain name and have a SkySilk Linux VPS deployed. We will be using a Wordpress template VPS for this tutorial.

Find your VPS IP Address

Navigate to your VPS Dashboard on SkySilk. Select the container you want to point your domain at. You will find the IP address under the name of the VPS:

Copy the IP address, as that is where we will be pointing our domain.

How to Edit the DNS

This step will vary depending on where you purchased your domain name. Log into your account and navigate to your domain settings, and edit the DNS settings. Under the records section, edit the 'A' record to point at your VPS IP address:

The change can take a few minutes to take effect. Once it does, navigating to your domain name in a browser will display the content of your VPS. In our particular case, it will display our Wordpress template site:

Now users can easily view the Wordpress site by navigating to the domain name rather than the IP. That's it for this tutorial, and the same process can be repeated for any future domain names/hosting setups you may have.
